Mary’s Song Showed She Understood The Implications of Jesus’ Birth

Many things happen to us that have significant implications both good and bad. Think about being asked to be in a friend’s wedding.  On the down side, you may have to take time off work. You’ll probably have travel and lodging expenses. It’s likely you’ll either need to buy a new dress or rent a tuxedo. Hopefully you’ll know which. But there’s also an up side. The invitation tells you that you’re valued as a close friend. The bride or groom regards you highly enough to choose you for an honored place in their special day. One of the first things we learn in the Bible about the Christmas story is that the Father chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus. Out of all the people who ever lived throughout all time the Father chose Mary. Soon after she learned this she visited her cousin Elizabeth who greeted her with a Spirit-filled greeting Luke 1:39-45. In the verses that follow Elizabeth’s greeting we have what is call the Magnificat  or Mary’s Song. It was her response to Elizabeth. Let’s look at the first four verses of Mary’s Song.
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. Luke 1:46-49
Mary’s song is beautiful. It’s so eloquent some scholars don’t think a teenager could have composed it! It’s likely Mary was also filled with the Spirit as she said it, but even so, it came from her lips. Today I’d like for us to see that Mary’s song showed she grasped two powerful personal implications of being chosen to be the mother of the Messiah.

Two Implications From Mary’s Song

  1. The Father held her in high regard. By choosing her, God the Father showed a humble teenager He valued her. Although Mary was a descendant of King David Luke 3:23-38 it appears she and Joseph were poor Luke 2:24. She saw herself as a “slave”, which is a better translation of the word translated “servant”. Yet even so she understood that future generations would know of her because of the Father. She was right!
  1. The Father worked on her behalf. The great things the Father did for Mary were choosing her and miraculously enabling her, a virgin, to become pregnant with the Messiah. Only God could do those things. Her response was to praise Him and acknowledge He is holy. He is separate from and unlike any other being!
[Tweet "Mary’s song showed she fully grasped God’s care and power"] What the Father demonstrated to Mary through Jesus birth He demonstrated to us through the cross Romans 5:6-10. Mary was special to the Father. So are you.

He cared for her. He cares for you.

He did mighty deeds for her. He does mighty deeds for you.

Stop now and like Mary, praise Him. Holy is His name! Please leave a comment or question below.
