Talking With God the Father

If you’re like me there are people in your life you find it hard to talk with. When you encounter someone like that you exchange greetings and then your mind goes blank. You try to think of something to talk about. Even discussing the weather is painful. After awkwardly struggling for a few minutes you think of a reason why you need to be going. In contrast there are some people you look forward to talking with. When you’re with someone like that you never feel like you have enough time to talk. It’s comfortable and natural and enjoyable. Which of these two scenarios describes how you feel when talking with God the Father? Many people don’t even talk to the Father when they pray, addressing their prayers to Jesus. You may not think it’s a big deal who you pray to, but it was for Jesus. In the Lord’s Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 and in John 16:23 Jesus specifically told us to pray to the Father. Is it possible we pray to Jesus because we aren't comfortable with the Father? Since Jesus told us we need to talk to the Father it’s something we should work on. I've learned you can get comfortable talking with anyone if you’re willing to invest time in the relationship. The same is true in relating to the Father.

The key to enjoying and feeling comfortable talking with God the Father is getting to know Him.”

1. Who He is Isaiah 40:18-28, Daniel 2:20-22. He is the eternal, awesome God greater than anyone or anything and is in control of everything. He’s powerful.
2. What He is like Romans 11:33-34. He is wise and His knowledge is beyond our comprehension. He is holy and perfect in judgment in all His ways. He’s trustworthy.
3. What He’s done for you 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, John 1:12. He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross so that you might become one of his children. He’s loving.
4. How He feels about you Psalm 103:8-14, Luke 15:11-32. He is tender and compassionate toward you and understands all about you. He likes you.

God the Father loved you when you were weak, ungodly, a sinner and His enemy, Romans 5:6-10. When you grasp that He wants to spend time with you and that He likes you it will change your life! Here’s how to start.

4 steps to get to know God as Father

1. Admit you don’t know Him as Father.
2. Meditate on the verses above.
3. Commit to spend time talking with Him every day.
4. Pray daily you will get to know Him as Father.

I didn't come to know God as my Father until I was in my 30’s. At first it was hard but now one of my greatest joys is knowing I have a loving Father and talking with Him. It is worth the effort!
