Biblical Advice About Tithing

Today I got an email asking about tithing. It’s such an important question that I’m going to devote this post to it. Here’s the question:

I would like to understand the commandment in Malachi 3:10 about tithes and offerings. Is God only going to bless me when I tithe and curse me when I don’t? I want to tithe but my finances are so bad I’m not able to now. Based on this verse I feel guilty and am concerned God is going to curse me.

First, all of the Bible is for us to learn from but not all of it is directed to us. Malachi 3 isn’t written to anyone today. Tithing is part of the Old Testament (OT) Law. If we think the tithing commandment applies to us, then to be consistent all 613 commandments in the OT apply to us. No one believes that today. We can still learn from and benefit from this Scripture.

Since this command about tithing isn’t written to us, the blessings and curses related to tithing don’t apply to us either. God is not going to curse you if you don’t tithe.

The Principles Of Tithing And Giving

The principle of tithing isn’t carried over to the New Testament (NT) but the principle of giving is. Here’s how the principle of giving in the NT replaces tithing in the OT.

We’re responsible to God to use our finances wisely Matthew 25:14-30. Jesus says giving is part of that responsibility Matthew 6:2. Our giving is to be secret because God is the only one who needs to know about it Matthew 6:3-4. There should be no peer pressure to give, just the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

Giving is to be voluntary and cheerful. This is perhaps the most important principle. In the OT tithing was commanded. It was an obligation. That’s not true today. We’re to give out of gratitude 2Corinthians 9:7. If you aren’t giving cheerfully then stop until you can. God doesn’t need your money. He wants your faith and gratitude.

We’re to practice proportional giving. Give as your ability allows. In the OT it was strictly 10%. In the NT it can be less or more depending upon your ability and your circumstances Luke 21:1-4; 2Corinthians 8:11–15.

Give to support local churches 1 Timothy 5:17-18 and ministries outside of our churches Philippians 4:16–18. Make a priority of giving to those in need Galatians 6:8-10, the poor, widows and orphans Matthew 6:2, James 1:27.

God promises a blessing for giving Luke 6:38; 2Corinthians 9:6–9, Matthew 6:3-4. This is NOT a promise of financial blessing as many people would have you think. It could be but it may not be. God will bless you in the way He chooses. I like the sound of that!.

My Personal Practice Of Giving

I was in my late 20’s when I first learned the joy of giving. I had not been walking closely with God. I made some bad business decisions and ended up seriously in debt. God used the debt to get my attention and draw me back to Him. As I walked closer to God I struggled with how much to give. Every penny other than my basic needs went to pay off the debt. It looked like it would take 10 to 20 years to pay it off. In faith I made the decision to begin to give even though it would slow down paying off my debt. The most amazing thing happened. God gave me a joy in giving I’d never before experienced. And, my debt did NOT go away! That’s right, there was no quick amazing miracle. God did provide however and after a few short years of faithful living He paid off my debt.

Since then my wife and I have used the principle of giving 10% as a starting point. Yes, there have been times when things have been difficult financially and we didn’t give that much. In the times of plenty it’s been our joy to give more than 10%.

What is your experience of giving?

Is there something about which you’d like biblical advice? If so, post your question below or send me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

The Trump Card of Thankful Responses

Okay America, it’s almost time for that awkward moment of silence that we experience as part of our Thanksgiving tradition. I’m not talking about the silence that happens when the person who’s asked to say grace, who hasn’t prayed out loud since he was asked at Thanksgiving five years ago, tries to remember what he prayed back then. I’m talking about the silence that fills the room when someone (usually an older person) at the Thanksgiving meal says,

Since it’s Thanksgiving I think we should all go around the table and say something we’re thankful for this year!

Of course the person who asks has been thinking about this moment all week. He’s memorized a list of things to throw out there to prime the pump. He looks around and all he sees are blank looks. The silence is deafening. Everyone can hear their heart beating. Beads of sweat begin to form on foreheads. Some are swallowing nervously. Everyone waits. No one wants to go first. One by one he looks at everyone around the table. Still nothing. It seems like an eternity but it’s only been a few seconds.

Then he decides what item from his long list to share. With an overly confident smile on his face he decides to show why he was the one who asked the question. He pulls out the trump card of thankful statements! He says,

Okay, I’ll start. I’m thankful for everyone here at the table.

Oh, no! At that moment everyone thinks, “He pulled the trump card! There is no way that I can top that!” Outwardly everyone nods seriously and smiles nervously. He’s thrown down the gauntlet. Is there anyone who is brave enough to speak now? It’s not possible to top that. Once again silence fills the room. Then, your darling little niece says,

I’m thankful for my kitty.

YES! You’re saved! Everyone smiles and says things like, “Isn’t that cute?” “You’re such a sweetheart!” The danger has passed. Then, with the burden of topping the trump card gone, everyone shares freely. There is a collective sigh of relief.

Another Thanksgiving tradition has been honorably kept.

In everything give thanks! 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Day 1 – Mission to Minister To The Persecuted Church

Schedule: Travel from Chicago to Chennai, India (with a stop in Abu Dhabi)

Time: Depart Oct 14th at 1:10 PM CDT arrive Oct 15th 10:40 AM CDT which is 9:10 PM India time.

Today is the first day of our missionary journey to India and Egypt. Caleb and I have spent many weeks of praying, planning and preparing. Thanks to each of you who have prayed and given to make this trip possible.

How does one decide to go on a trip like this? How do you decide to do anything for the Lord? How do you decide if you should start a small group? Or volunteer for a support position at church or in another ministry? How do you decide if you should take a leadership role at church or perhaps start a ministry? How do you decide to support a ministry with your prayers or finances?

If you would have told me five years ago that I was going to be teaching 500 plus pastors in India and Egypt our Stand Firm Seminar I would have smiled and thought, “That sounds great!” I don’t know that I would have had the faith to do this at that time. Which is perhaps why the Lord didn’t lead me to do it then!

To answer this let’s look to some biblical principles to guide us here. The very first official missionary journey in the book of Acts was by Paul and Barnabas. In Acts 13:1-3 we read of how it was that they went out on their first missionary journey.

1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Principles For Discerning A New Ministry Task

The Holy Spirit wanted Paul and Barnabas to go.

The Holy Spirit communicated this to the leaders.

The leaders fasted and prayed to confirm they understood what the Spirit was saying.

Paul and Barnabas left with the blessing and supporting prayers of the church.

There is a lot that isn’t said here. Just how did the Holy Spirit tell them to have Paul and Barnabas go? The fact that it doesn’t tell us “how” tells us that the “how” isn’t important. What is important is they heard Him.

Also they were able to confirm that they got it right. Many times we get wild ideas and think they’re from God! If godly, mature leaders don’t confirm your wild-eyed plans, maybe you should reconsider them. One of the ways the Spirit confirms His direction is by others blessing you and supporting you.

Finally, they went. We’re blessed to see what happens on their journey. It was fruitful but not without difficulty.

Two years ago a Pastor and his wife in India heard my teaching and said that they felt the Lord wanted me to teach this all over India. Was that the Spirit speaking through him? I was open to it. We have prayed and fasted and the Lord opened doors last year and again this year. While planning this second trip to India we received an invitation to teach in Egypt. So we are going.

God has something for all of us to do. What is the Spirit saying to you? What is the tug of your heart? Listen to it. Pray and fast and confirm it with others. Then move forward on it!

Please pray for us right now as you read this for

safety in travel

good health

open hearts for those who will sit under our ministry

Sin’s Power Is Strong Against Us

A little boy is tempted. There within reach is a delicious treat. But he’s not supposed to eat it. The urge is strong. Then he does what everyone does. He looks around to see if anyone is watching. He’s calculating whether he will be caught. Ah, but he’s already caught! Not by Mom but by sin’s power lurking within.

We’ve all done it. We still do it! We’re in a hurry. The sign says “No right turn on red.” We look. No one’s around. We turn right on red. We’re at our desk. The inbox is full, there’s much to do. The thought of doing some personal shopping online on company time crosses our mind. We look around and see everyone’s busy. Perhaps they’re shopping, too. We give in to the urge.

Every day we experience sin’s power as either rewards or punishment. It’s a universal experience. The Bible describes this well when talking about Moses.

By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. Hebrews 11:24-26

The Rewards And Punishment Of Sin’s Power

Make no mistake, sin offers real pleasure as a reward. I’ve had addicts tell me there is no greater pleasure in life than that first high from crack cocaine. But then it’s gone. It’s fleeting. That’s the way sin works. Your anger rises and you scream at someone. It feels great! For a moment. Another time you’re depressed and as you wallow in it you have an urge to feed it. You want the pleasure your particular painkiller gives, alcohol, drugs, sex, junk food. It kills the pain. For a moment. Then there’s more pain, a different kind. Guilt and shame.

Sin’s power also includes the threat of punishment. Moses rejected the pleasures of sin in Pharaoh’s palace that were equal to any in the world. By doing that he was punished. Berated as a religious nut. Jesus said that punishment would include being persecuted, reviled and falsely accused Matthew 5:10-12.

In order to overcome sin’s power we first have to recognize it. It’s like the power of a mighty river flowing against us. Yet for every impulse that seeks to push us to conform to its wishes we have a choice. We can give in. That’s the easy thing to do but it leads to acts of sin and death. Or we can do like Moses did. We can refuse and choose.

[Tweet “Each time sin’s power tries to influence us we can refuse to go along and choose God’s path.”]

This is the essence of the battle we face each day with our enemy the flesh. The force of the flesh is so strong Paul calls it the law of sin. And as a law sin’s power is strong against us. But we have hope! As Paul says,

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7:25

Today refuse and choose!

We Can Evaluate Our Spiritual Health

Technology has made it easy to keep track of things. Devices keep track of how many steps we take in the day and how many calories we burn when we exercise. We use our computers to keep track of how much money we have in the bank. We look at our phones for what’s on the schedule for the day. With some devices we can even see how long we slept the night before!

A device we don’t have is one that keeps track of our spiritual health. Let’s think about what such a device would involve. There’s an online movie review for kids that gives detailed tallies of sexuality, profanity and violence in movies. That would be a good place to start. If these are important in evaluating movies for kids they should be important in evaluating our spiritual health, right?

Spiritual Health Tracker

If we’re going to do this right we need to add a few more categories. We would need to add both positives and negatives. How about these?

Evil desires versus good desires. How much time did we spend thinking about each?

Temptations. How many did we give in to?

Victory over temptations. How many did we resist?

Sins. How many? We could break these down into sexual, profanity and violence.

Anger meter. This is significant enough for its own category.

Good deeds, acts of kindness. How many did we do (unselfishly)?

Prayer. How long did we pray today?

There are many other things we could include here but this is a good start. What do you think? Would you want a detailed daily review of your spiritual health? (I’d like to hear from you on this. Please leave a comment below.)

As fascinating as tracking these may be, the details aren’t really the issue. The real issue is the amount of attention you give to your spiritual health. Do you pay as much attention to it as to your physical health or financial health?

Did you know there’s a way to evaluate your spiritual health right now? It’s remarkably simple. You only need to look inside your heart and determine if you are spiritual or carnal. Here’s what that means.

Spiritual – having the qualities produced by the Spirit filling our hearts. These are

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

Carnal – having the qualities produced by the flesh filling our hearts. These are

sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

Paying attention to your heart to know how you are doing spiritually is the starting point. What do you do if you are carnal right now? How did you get there? What can you do to prevent it? We’ll be talking about these and other related issues in the next few posts.

Christians Can Be Carnal

There are many cultural differences found throughout the US (as described in a blog post you can read by clicking here). I grew up in California and have lived in the Midwest for the past 23 years. One difference I have observed is people’s willingness to admit their shortcomings. Let me explain.

I teach a community outreach seminar called “Creating A Healthy Family – Breaking The Dysfunctional Cycle.” It’s a free seminar held in churches as an outreach to communities. It’s designed to help people deal with unhealthy family background issues to build healthy families. We’ve taught dozens of these seminars in California with thousands of people in attendance. I ran into a problem when I tried to scheduled the seminar in a church in Illinois. They wanted the seminar but only if we changed the name. They said they would have trouble attracting people to it because the name of the seminar implied those attending didn’t have healthy families.

It was an interesting and correct observation for the Midwest. In California people don’t share that same concern. We changed the name (it was so memorable I don’t remember what we changed it to). The content was the same. We dealt with the same issues. We had over a hundred people attend. It was a great event.

Some of us have difficulty in seeing ourselves in a negative light or thinking others see us in a negative light.

So how would you like it if you got a letter that said this,

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:1 NKJV

Observations On Being Carnal

Brethren, that is Christians, can be carnal.

Carnal is in contrast to spiritual.

One can observe whether a person is spiritual or carnal.

The people he wrote to were carnal.

Carnal is like an infant, a baby in Christ.

Being carnal isn’t a good thing.

Do you understand what the Bible means by carnal or “fleshly” in some translations? Do you think this was just a problem for the Corinthians? Do you know today if you are carnal or spiritual? We’ll explore this more in the next post but I’d like to hear from you. What do you think the Bible means by carnal?

For some, the title of this post may seem odd. After all, the word “Christian” is a positive word. It’s how we identify followers of Christ. It follows that a Christian’s behavior will be Christ-like. Therefore if you’re Christian you must be good. That’s why we get halos, isn’t it?

No, that isn’t necessarily the case. One does not become a Christian by adhering to godly rules of behavior. The word Christian was first used in a church to describe those who were followers of Christ Acts 11:26. A person is not a follower of Jesus because he or she chooses to emulate Jesus’ behavior. No one is good enough to successfully do that Ephesians 2:8-9. Rather, a Christian is one who believes in Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection as the payment for one’s personal sins 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

It’s true that becoming a Christian changes you.

Your sins are forgiven Colossians 1:14.

You are a new creation 2 Corinthians 5:17.

You have the Spirit of God Romans 8:9 and Jesus Colossians 1:27 living within you.

There are many more things that could be added to this list. Your faith in Jesus has had an impact on you.

On the other hand becoming a Christian doesn’t guarantee that you will live a morally pure life. You may still be a good or bad Christian. Anyone who is a Christian already knows this by experience. Here are some verses that support this.

Anyone who says he doesn’t have an inclination to sin is deceiving himself 1 John 1:8.

Anyone who says he doesn’t sin makes God a liar 1 John 1:10.

God has told us what to do to be forgiven when we sin 1 John 1:9.

Jesus is our advocate, defending us before the Father when we sin 1 John 2:1-2

So Christians sin. Since it’s understood and even assumed that Christians still sin, what then is a “bad Christian?” It’s not simply someone who sins.

[Tweet “A bad Christian is one who consistently disregards the biblical standards for Christ-followers.”]

It’s one who knows what is right to do in God’s eyes but intentionally and consistently rejects it. It’s possible to be a Christian and blatantly not show it in your behavior. Here’s what Paul told the church at Corinth to do about people like that.

“But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother [is a Christian] if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.” 1 Corinthians 5:11

The terms above, sexual immorality, greed, etc., are broad and can include just about any sin.

Is there an area of your life where you aren’t acting like Christ and you know it but you refuse to confess it or seek God’s help to stop? Then you’re a bad Christian.

The good news is that to go from bad Christian to good Christian takes but a moment. Humble yourself, confess your sin. God will forgive you, smile upon you. You’re back on track! Don’t give up. God hasn’t given up on you.

What do you think? I’d love to hear from you below.

Spiritual Growth Is Difficult For The Spiritually Hard Of Hearing

One of the challenges pastors face in preparing messages is that congregations are made up of people in different stages of their Christian life. Some are more mature in the faith than others. This is in part because some are new Christians and some have been Christians for many years. But there is another reason why this is true. Some are able to hear what’s being taught better than others.

Of course, I’m not talking about the ability to hear audibly. I’m talking about the ability to hear spiritually. Some Christians have a spiritual hearing problem and it’s hindering their spiritual growth. This isn’t anything new. The book of Hebrews was written to people who had this same problem. We know this because Hebrews 5:11 says

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

The author started talking about Jesus as our High Priest and he wanted to tell them more. But he couldn’t because of their spiritual hearing problem. From what he says next it appears they had been Christians for a while.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:12-14

The writer tells us there is an expectation for all Christians.

[Tweet “There’s a point in our Christian lives when we should be a teacher.”]

This doesn’t mean that everyone is going to be a teacher. Certainly not in the sense of having to teach a class or lead a Bible study. What is expected is that everyone grows to to the point one knows as much about the Christian life as a teacher knows.

These verses tell us two important principles of spiritual growth.

2 Principles of Spiritual Growth

The method of spiritual growth: be skilled in the word of righteousness Hebrews 5:13

The measure of spiritual growth: be trained to distinguish good from evil Hebrews 5:14

In order to grow as Christians we need to spend enough time reading and studying the Bible until we get to the point where we can discern good from evil. This means discerning good and evil in your own life. We’re already pretty good at detecting good and evil in others.

A regular and constant intake of God’s Word also leads to spiritual growth. As that happens the Word shows us what we are doing right and encourages us. It also shows us what we are doing wrong and trains us to change.

[Tweet “The more time we spend in God’s Word the more it changes us.”]

It shows us things we need to change in ourselves to be better employees, neighbors, sons, daughters, better Christians. If we don’t grow it becomes hard to hear what God wants to tell us.

When was the last time you heard God tell you something about good or evil in your life? If you can’t remember when that last happened perhaps you have become spiritually hard of hearing? It isn’t a mystery. Our spiritual growth depends upon spending time taking in God’s Word.

I’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment or question below.

Christians fail. If you’re not a Christian you may be surprised to hear that. Christians aren’t perfect and fail often. We fail each time we sin. We fail in our jobs, marriages, parenting and, well, you get the picture. Yet there’s something unique to know about failure as a Christian. It doesn’t change the way God treats us or sees us.

[Tweet “Any failure can be an impediment or an incentive to spiritual growth.”]

What does failure mean to you if you’re a Christian? It means you’re normal. Here are six things the Bible tells us about how God relates to us when we fail.

God provides for our spiritual failure. Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection has paid the price for any sin we have or will commit. We need only humble ourselves and ask to be forgiven and restored and we will be. 1 John 1:9, 2:1

God doesn’t condemn us for failing. Once we become a child of God by faith and are part of God’s family He treats us like His child. A good parent doesn’t shame a child who fails. Neither does God shame us. Romans 8:1

God doesn’t reject us when we fail. There is no one who failed more publicly than King David 2 Samuel 11-12. Yet God forgave him and didn’t reject him. Even after he died was kind to Judah because of him 2 Kings 8:19.

God doesn’t disqualify us because of spiritual failure. Saul was a persecutor of the Church, beating and imprisoning Christians, even agreeing to watch Stephen as he was stoned to death. Yet God didn’t hold it against him when Paul turned to God in faith and repented of his sin. God used him to do great things for Him Acts 9:11-16.

God can use failure to enable us to grow. Peter failed Jesus spectacularly when he denied he knew Jesus three times. Yet he learned and grew and went on to become one of the leaders of the early church. Luke 22:54-62, Acts 2:14-41

God is patient with us during our spiritual failures. God let’s us sin. That doesn’t mean He doesn’t care. He gives us time to repent and turn back to Him 2 Peter 3:9.

Failing in the Christian life doesn’t mean you are a failure. It means you’re normal.

[Tweet “Satan says you’re a failure and accuses you. God’s says you failed and forgives you.”]

When I feel like a failure knowing these truths and knowing God’s unconditional love and acceptance lifts me up and gets me back pressing on. Pick one of these truths and think about it all through the day today.

Which one of these six truths most speaks to your heart? Please leave a comment below.

The Biblical Norm Is To Be Growing Spiritually

I grew up in northern California where it’s usually hot and dry in the summer and fall, and cooler but not freezing with some rain in the winter and spring. In contrast the Midwest, where I live now, is hot and wet during the spring and summer and very cold in the winter. My wife and I have observed that in the Midwest the countryside is green in the summer and brown in the winter. In California it’s brown in the summer (unless it’s irrigated) and green in the winter.

Plants grow very well in both places but they have to be suited to the climate. It’s true that California has a longer growing season but the arid climate demands lots of water. Since California is in the midst of the fourth year of a drought growing things are difficult. Many things can interfere with the growth of plants and of people.

A healthy plant grows. So it is with Christians. The principle of growth is found throughout the Bible. Let’s consider four different aspects of what it means to be growing spiritually as a Christian.

4 Aspects of Growing Spiritually

We grow by taking in spiritual nourishment 1 Peter 2:2. This is primarily by taking in the truth of God’s word. We do that by reading and studying the Bible and by listening to Bible teachers. If we don’t regularly take it in we stay like babies, only able to handle spiritual milk Hebrews 5:12-14.

Spiritual nourishment leads us to grow in faith and love 2 Thessalonians 1:3. This is our ability to trust God and love others. The Bible teaches what God is like and what to expect from Him. As we learn that, we’re able to trust Him for more and more things. We also have a better understanding of how to love others.

Growing in faith and love lead us to grow in grace and in how well we know Jesus 2 Peter 3:18. Through time and experience we learn how giving and forgiving God is. Especially when we don’t deserve it. That’s what grace is. Then our gratitude grows immensely! This helps us know the Father, Son and Spirit better and better.

This all leads to producing fruit for God Mark 4:8. In the parable of the sower Jesus says Christians, the seeds that take root in good soil, grow and produce much fruit for God. This is normal and expected. Fruit is any good work we do for God Ephesians 2:10.

[Tweet “The Bible assumes that Christians will grow in faith, love, grace and producing good works.”]

Right now compare your spiritual life today to a year or two ago.

Do you trust God more now than you did then?

Are you loving more people?

Are you more grateful to God?

Are you doing more for Him?

If you are, give God thanks!

If not, it’s time to get growing spiritually. It all starts with a balanced diet of spiritual nourishment.
