Your Calling as A Christian

I think it’s an accurate statement to say that most people don’t use the term “calling” when they talk about their lives. There are many who do, but I don’t think it is a majority or anywhere close to it. People who say they have a calling are those who feel a burden to help people or follow a cause of some kind and pursue careers where they can do that. Many have a religious calling and become pastors or serve in churches or service organizations. Others have a desire to help but without the religious element and devote themselves to things like education, animal welfare and eradicating poverty.

What about you? Would you say that you have a calling in life? You may not have considered it before, but if you are a Christian, you have a calling. You have been called to be a follower of Christ, a Christ-one or Christian.

4 Implications of Your Calling

1. You are following Jesus. When you believed Jesus died on the cross, was buried and rose again for your sins you became a follower of Jesus. Jesus boldly said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me” John 14:6. He is in charge. Part of your calling is to follow Him, His example and His teaching. You are not on your own. You have a clear direction in life.
2. You are associated with Jesus. Jesus is a person, not a church or denomination or doctrine or theology. He lived a sinless life as an example for us and when we trusted in Him we forever became identified with Him. The world hated Jesus and killed Him. It still hates Him. It isn’t popular, but your calling means you are always associated with Jesus, at work, at home and everywhere. You have a new identity in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17.
3. You represent Jesus. There are many who don’t know Jesus, who know nothing about Him. Being called to be a follower of Jesus means we are His ambassadors, 2 Corinthians 5:20. Jesus told His followers, which now includes you and me, to share the good news of Jesus all over the world Matthew 28:18-20. Everywhere you go, everything you do is as the representative of Jesus. You have a clear mission in life.
4. You have expectations from Jesus. To be a Christian is a high calling. With it comes expectations. Paul expressed those expectations like this, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called” Ephesians 4:1. The way you live your life matters. You have a reason to strive to improve your life.

Regardless of your politics, if the president of the country where you are a citizen called you to do a special job for your country you would be honored. Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the world has called you to be His follower. You. Stop and think about that for a while. What an honor.
